Resources
Here are a few resources that have been valuable on my pedal-building journey:
- Aion FX's article on sourcing parts offers some great tips for selecting high-quality components
- Aion FX also provides exceptional build guides for their kits. I strongly recommend checking them out; you may gather some valuable insights
- This is a handy resource for decoding resistor colour bands
- Be sure to visit the Gray Bench Electronics YouTube channel, where you'll find a video demonstrating the assembly of a Rat clone
- I purchase my pots, switches and jacks from Fuzz Dog's Pedal Parts in the UK. They carry premium Gorva footswitches and offer some interesting tools like Rocket Sockets and Better Setter
- I get my PCBs from PedalPCB, and they're absolutely fantastic!
- At some point on your pedal-building journey, you'll inevitably encounter a broken pedal or a build that just doesn't work. An audio probe can be an extremely useful tool for debugging issues with a malfunctioning circuit
Tools
Here are some tools I personally use and can recommend. These are affiliate links, so your purchase helps support the project:
- I use this Lytool soldering station; it's reasonably priced and gets the job done effectively. If you're willing to invest more, the Hakko is a well-regarded choice
- You'll need some solder; I prefer to use lead-free
- Wire cutters are essential for trimming component leads and, of course, wires
- These wire strippers are great at stripping very fine wire gauges
- Needle-nose pliers come in handy for bending component leads etc.
- A multimeter is incredibly useful for measuring resistor values, testing diodes, checking continuity, and more
- Naturally, you'll require some hookup wire
- A PCB holder, while not essential, provides stability and enables you to rotate the board while populating it
- If you plan to drill your own enclosures, you'll require a step drill bit
